Emma Golby-Kirk

After enjoying a varied career in the arts, community and public sector, I have decided to follow my dream and explore the wonderful world of radio production. I am particularly excited by the opportunity to contribute creatively to such a dynamic and evolving medium at this landmark point in its development.I am using my time at Bournemouth to gain valuable experience of producing as much audio as possible across drama, documentary and feature forms. I am very much looking forward to starting a career as an audio producer and I never lose sight of what a privilege it is to be granted a brief ‘window’ into the fascinating lives of other people.

I hope you enjoy listening to my programmes and would welcome any feedback at emma@sublime.demon.co.uk

Sweet Waters

This piece is adapted from a couple of scenes in the novel Sweet Thames by Matthew Kneale. It was made as part of a series of podcasts which would accompany a walk around London from the banks of the Thames, through the streets of Soho and out to the Crossness Pumping Station at Abbey Wood. The series gives a historical account of the development of the London sewers driven through fictional characters.

A Dickens of a Stink!

What did Charles Dickens do when he wasn’t writing his great novels? He was writing great letters of complaint, that’s what. This piece is a reading of a letter that Charles Dickens wrote from Gad’s Hill on Wednesday July 7th 1858, in which he ‘kicked up a great stink’ about – well – the ‘Great Stink’ a term used to refer to the state of the River Thames at that time.

Two Plus One Makes Perfect

In an age when people have never had so much control over how many children they have, why is it that so many are choosing to have just one?

I talked to my good friend and mother of one, Helen, to find out what affect, if any, this life of singular attention has had on her son Dominic…

Seeking Solace in a Foreign Land

Each Friday, on a busy tree lined avenue in central Southampton, over 100 refugees and asylum seekers are welcomed through the doors of a church drop-in centre. Here they receive a wide range of help and support from Southampton’s refugee support agencies ranging from English classes to welfare and legal advice.
I went along to find out more about what happens at the drop-in session and, whilst there, I heard one woman’s powerful story of her struggle to be granted leave to remain in Britain.
