This piece is a dramatised section of the novel ‘Gypsy boy’ by Mikey Walsh, a born and bred Romany Gypsy. Set in the early 80’s, ‘Gypsy Boy’ tells the story of Mikeys turbulent childhood growing up in the Gypsy community; facing confliction, violence and rejection but the gated a traditonal Romany culture. ‘Gypsy Boy’ presents itself as a new and exciting type of audio for the listeners of BBC Radio 4; looking to sit on Radio 4’s ‘Classic Serial’ section, ‘Gypsy Boy’ is a suggestion that could broaden the range of listening available on the platform. The idea of ‘Gypsy Boy’ is to introduce a new kind of listening for BBC Radio 4 as a new section to their online service; to work along side the ‘Classic Serial’ a new genre could be created entitled the ‘New Serial’. ‘Gypsy Boy’ aims to allow for newer books to be adapted and dramatized for Radio 4, and is a suggestion to ‘modernise’ the platform, and to attract a younger audience. Gypsy boy is a gripping and compelling drama, that explores the highs and frequent lows of Mikyes’ childhood, working as part of a series, ‘Gypsy Boy E02’ offers an insight into the potential of this programme for future development on this story- and for others to potentially follow in ‘The New Serial’. Please be aware that some of the content in this programme, some listeners may find disturbing or distressing.
