Remembering Alan

10 August 2017 BIRSt News Features Home

Alan is remembered by all the staff and students at BU from the very start of BIRSt in 1999.  Without Alan, BIRSt simply wouldn’t have happened. He saw the station though re-launch transitions annually with his signature smile and patience.  Every award won by the station has Alan’s name invisibly engraved on it.

Alan worked at Bournemouth University for 37 years, as technical support and then as demonstrator/tutor in radio. His love for the medium was apparent from the outset and he completed his MA Radio Production in 2008 with Professor Sean Street.

Alan has been the backbone of BIRSt from the beginning. He has managed the website, supporting 1000s of students in both Radio and Journalism to further careers. His patience, knowledge and passion for radio will be missed.

Hear a selection of Alan’ s work, including features about knitting, World War II from a teenage point of view and something strange that happened in his back garden.  His work was diverse, layered and interesting, winning him a BEA Silver Award in 2008.

Behind the scenes Alan was hard-working but with a great sense of humour,  the enabler of so many ideas from students and staff.  He truly loved radio.  BIRSt will miss him.  We would love you to share memories of working or being taught with him via the Facebook Page or comment below.
