BA (Hons) Journalism student Georgie Barnes was named the second recipient of the 2019 Alan Brown Award. The award was set up to honour BIRSt alumni and BU staff member Alan Brown, who sadly passed away in 2017.
Georgie’s piece describes the condition through further understanding of experiencing sensory overload and how it can affect your day to day life.
Georgie received the award from Mel Brown at a ceremony attended by BA Journalism students across all years on Friday 8th March.
In an exclusive interview for BIRSt, Mel said, “(Alan) was the smiling face in the corridor … he also had his radio persona. Very often when he played pieces to us, suddenly a whole new Alan would come out – it was incredible to hear it.” She also praised Georgie for a piece that was “considered and mature, tackling an important subject with sensitivity.”
